Frequently Asked Question

What are the requirements to become a Captain?
Last Updated 4 months ago

I am currently a Senior First Officer, how do I become a Captain?

To become a captain the requirements are as follows:

• A minimum of 12 months service at BAVirtual

• 150 on-duty hours

• 100 route sectors

• Successful completion of a Moodle Command Course

• Being in Category “A” - you meet all the above requirements for promotion subject to successfully completing the Moodle command course

I'm ready to become a Captain, what do I need to do?

Once a co-pilot has been assigned to Category A (stated above), they will be able to apply for promotion to Captain. You can do this by raising a ticket (Membership Enquiry/Rank Progression).

Your Chief Pilot will assess your application and if successful you will be granted access to the Moodle Command Course. The Moodle course is focussed on operational decision making and the role, expectations and personal standards required of a BAVirtual Captain and can be found at moodle.bavirtual.co.uk.

As part of the course you will complete practical Command Training and a Command Line Check. This is usually conducted using shared cockpit technology. Full details are found within the Moodle course. Successful completion of the Command Check will result in being awarded the rank of Captain.

What happens after 12 months, or I don't want to take the Moodle Course?

Pilots will be able to continue to fly after the 12 month period. Once you have completed 12 months membership, and 150 hours, you will automatically be promoted to Senior First Officer.
